Betsy Heimann, a costume designer, designed this shearling coat, which became one of the most famous outfits from the Kate Hudson movie Almost Famous. Almost Famous chronicled the life and times of a roadie in the ‘70s, and Heimann said that it was this rock ‘n roll lifestyle that inspired her costume design for the coat.
Heimann said that she researched photographs from the ‘70s rock era and took into account who Penny Lane really was. She said Lane was “crying on the inside” but “laughing on the outside,” and she wanted to design the shearling coat to function as a “cocoon.” The shape of the shearling coat was also partially inspired by a 1920s opera coat, with a broad collar and swinging bottom.
