Worn By: Marilyn Monroe
Year: 1954
Value: $280,000*
One of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe’s greatest film roles was that of Kay Weston in River of No Return, and her red and gold dress from the movie sold at auction for $280,000. The ensemble was designed by Helen Rose for a different actress, Betty Grable, for the 1943 movie Coney Island.
The outfit was reworked for Monroe eleven years later, and a black bow and red beading were added for Monroe’s use. Debbie Reynolds bought the yellow silk period gown from Fox, along with a huge amount of other costumes from Hollywood’s Golden Era. She kept it in her possession for years before it went back up for sale.
