Sting, for those who aren’t familiar with the many, many volumes of Lord of the Rings lore, was a large, Elvish-made dagger that was used in both LOTR and The Hobbit. It functioned as the sword-of-choice for LOTR’s unlikely hero, Bilbo Baggins, who used it to fend off giant spiders in Mirkwood.
He would then pass the sword on to Frodo, who used it while on his adventure to destroy the Ring. Sting sold at auction for $161,000 in 2013, and it was one of eight main character props from the film to hit the auction block. The real-life sword was made of lightweight aluminum, with Elvish inscriptions etched into it with acid.
