Sound of Music: Pinafore Dress

Worn By: Julie Andrews
Year: 1965
Value: $1.56 million*

Julie Andrews certainly knows how to make a classic movie. After singing songs about tidying up and women’s rights in Mary Poppins she was shepherding children in 1965’s The Sound of Music. The latter became just as important as the former.

One particular dress from the movie came up at auction in 2013, selling for an astonishing $1.56 million. It was the brown pinafore number that Maria wears in the scene where she sings “Do-Re-Mi” to the children. Andrews herself would likely have been blown away by the extortionate price, but there’s no underestimating the impact of cinema.
